In the Phoenix metropolitan area, it’s common to hear people say, “there are two types of homes, the homes that have termites and the homes that will get termites”. This is a common occurrence and if you’ve lived in the valley for any length of time, chances are you’ve had at least one experience with subterranean termites – or maybe more.
What do I look for?
Subterranean termites build a “mud tube” everywhere they go once they come above the surface of the ground. You might find them on your foundation around the exterior of your home or on the interior foundation of your garage. Sometimes they will look like a string hanging from your ceiling or a line running up your wall.
It's normal to feel a little panic the first time you discover your home has the dreaded termite tubes showing up. How long have they been here? Does my home have tons of damage?
Answers to some of your questions
- How long have they been here? It is hard to tell for sure but usually if they are found in just one or two areas it would indicate a shorter time. Conversely, if they are in multiple areas and damage is found it would indicate a longer stay!
- Does my home have tons of damage? The type of termites found in the valley will usually build a visible “mud tube” long before they have done any substantial damage to your home but left unchecked, they will do damage.
- How often should I have my home checked? It is wise to get your home checked on an annual basis. Usually that will be sufficient to catch termites early on and alleviate them before they have a chance to be a bigger problem.
